I think this is ridiculous. Some shorts are so short to leave nothing to the imagination and I doubt they ban those. How about tight pants and leggings? What do you think about this?

I really don't get why a middle school age child has to wear a dress like that to a dance at all. Where I live they don't have dances like that for middle school aged kids.

Our schools have a dress code to address issues like shorts etc.

If it were high school I'd say that was unreasonable, but for middle school I can see the principal's point. Sorta.

Strapless gowns for 13 year olds are not necessary, and IMHO age inappropriate. The gown pictured are more appropriate for senior prom, not for an eighth grade dance.

Like Larkspur123's school, our school also has a dress code for shorts, yoga pants, etc.

What is considered middle school anyway....6,7,8? 7 and 8?

I'm not a prude but I just don't see the hurry for a seventh grader to wear a strapless dress. Why can't an event like that be casual, for that age group.

When oldest was in junior high they had some casual mixer type events, dress code expectations for school applied to those events.

I don't live in a conservative area, either.

The funny thing is that the girls will be busy getting semi-formal dresses, and many of the boys will probably attend looking like bums(but at least they will be covered up).

It seems like the expectations for the girls at dances keeps going up, while the expectations for boys goes down.

Yeah. middle school is usually 6-8th grade, so roughly ages 11-14.

12 year-olds really don't need to wear strapless gowns IMO. And 13 year old boys don't need to be in rooms with girls who are one strong tug away from having their baby boobage exposed LOL.

Some of the 8th graders might. 13-14 year old early bloomers are out there. But at that age, I would imagine most of the ones so blessed are a bit awkward about it even if some of their peers give them attention over it.

Would I want my middle school daughter to wear something provcative? No.
But it's my job as a parent to decide that, not the schools.

Besides, since when is it the female's job to control the male's behavior with what she wears?
This is a very slippery slope.
Males should be held accountable for their own behavior.

So you don't think schools have any role in setting a dress code for a function that I'm guessing occurs on school grounds?
