Racial tension between whites and blacks/Hispanic in S. central and Eastern PA (Pottsville: crime, buyers)

One of the reasons my family and I escaped Allentown 20 years ago. Influx of Hispanics and Section 8 low income housing, decrease in property values, escalated vandalism (smashed windshields on my street, several times) and crime. Gang insignia spray painted everywhere. Brand new playground equipment smashed and defaced. Good luck applying for a job at one of the hospitals there without knowing Spanish. This was 20 years ago, I can't imagine what it's like now. I have no need to ever return.

I grew up in a Berks County suburb. No need to describe the cesspool that Reading's become. My brother still lives there, and he avoids downtown. My mother and her friends used to have a "code word" for "Puerto Ricans" when complaining about them: "Power Rangers". So the grandkids wouldn't repeat anything derogatory at school. LIttle pitchers have big ears.

We moved clear across the state to a community without all the lovely "diversity", and never regretted it.

Yea you sound like the typical white trash resident of Pennsylvania, im sure you'll be glad to hear that Allentown is better now than it has been in 20-30 years, it must be those hispanics right? Have fun in your trailer park!!

Uh, no...I don't live in a trailer park. I have a nice spacious 120 year old Victorian house on an acre of land. Paid off years ago. Just spent time outside weeding one of my (many) flower/vegetable gardens, which I couldn't have back in Allentown due to the lack of space and Section 8 Hispanic neighbors (who moved there themselves from a trailer park and had no respect for other people's yards). I guess, for "white trash", we're doing pretty well.

If Allentown's improved, I'm glad to hear it. I haven't been there in 20 years.

Yes im sure its the hispanics fault that you lived in the middle of an urban city, that most of the housing was built 100 years ago, those damn hispanics man.

And Actually most of those "Hispanics" come from jersey city/ nyc, so if you know any trailer parks of the city, pass that info along.

as a person living in the coalman's area---i NEVER had the unfortunate experience of learning what the term white trash means until now---does not mean trailer park--it is a lifestyle composed of white people that verbally demean other ethnic groups--yet they themselves are dirty,slovenly,live off government handouts,do drugs,drink and breed as early as 15.In this area a 2 bedroom apt can have upto 8 family members(non working) living in it and still look down on others(these tend to be the ones buying the drugs from"out of towners"

these folks tend to be loud,gossipy neighborhood trouble makers minding everyone else's business,spreading stories and verbally demeaning others---and would steal off their own family members if it gives them some reward emotionally or financially.the children are a mess often left on their own no matter how young(ex-7 yr olds roaming neighborhoods at 9 pm,10 pm)

i lived in a racially diverse neighborhood in another area and never encountered what i see here in nepa--so do not blame other groups
the murders here are a result of gang wars and poor to none police enforcement or handling

The term white trash was originally used by slaves to describe very poor whites who were in worse circumstances than them. One can argue freedom is most important and I would agree but the point is these whites had a bleak future compared to the slaves. It should also be noted this is not going to be the case for all slaves.

In any event it's racial slur and would be no different than any other racial or ethnic slur.

And when the police crack down at Sherman Hills whoever took over for Felton will be complaining about racial profiling.
