I truly believe people didn't realize that when said "repeal Obamacare" they meant cut Medicare.

The Republicans don't seem to be in any hurry to repeal Obamacare (also known as ACA, where the first A ironically stands for "affordable").

Technically, they aren't cutting Medicare, they are cutting Medicaid. That said, many seniors are low income enough to be enrolled on both, and my understanding is Medicaid funding is essential for seniors to afford nursing care, meaning a lot of very sick elderly people are going to have to move in with their children if it passes. Or die.

The rate at which health insurance premiums increased did slow significantly under Obama. Of course, a lot of that was due to a hangover from the Recession (broke people spend less on healthcare) along with the shift nationwide to higher-deductible, lower-premium plans. Still, some of the ACA-related reforms (electronic health records, limits on overhead for insurance companies, shift to results-based reimbursements, rather than procedure based, bigger penalties for those who try to defraud Medicare/Medicaid) were thought to have resulted in a reduction of a few percent off of net premium increases each year.

Still, the ACA clearly didn't make health insurance affordable. We still spend twice as much as other industrialized nations for healthcare of the same or slightly worse value. There's really no way to address this in a free market system. The solutions are either to go the Canada/UK model, and do single payer, or go the Japanese/German/Swiss model, and have private insurance with price controls on drugs and procedures set by the government.

You left out the Libertarian option: eliminate government's role in healthcare completely and trust the free market to do what it does best.

This is a National issue, not a state oriented one. There are some discussions on this forum about healthcare: http://www.city-data.com/forum/health-insurance/
