The last phase of the biggest trial is over; Jerry Sandusky is now ensconced in one of the most remote locations within the Pennsylvania prison system, and will likely fade into oblivion as his mind deteriorates.

The hard questions are just begining for the remaining major players; Curley, Schultz and especially, Spanier have, in this writer's opinion, a whole lot of expalining to do as to just how an institution which labored so long, and so hard, to project an image of integrity allowed it to deteriorate because no figure emerged with enough character to take the reins.

Which brings us to Paterno; clearly and tragically, the man was culpable to some degee. But if it's lonely at the top, one can scarcely imagine the complications, and the additional pressures brought on by the uniqueness of his role, the isolation of a small circle of associates within a small, and very atypical community, and the peronal eccentricities of the man himself.

And last but surely not least, the Penn State Board of Trustees; those of us who attended Penn State have long recognzed that the Board ts selected in large part by a politicized and very indirect process, is far from a true representation of either the University's alumni or the population of the state istelf, and has long been involved in the in-fighting with various segments of the University community, one more reson why this writer has to question the imparialty of the Freeh investigation solicited by none other than -- the Board of Trustees!

And yet in many ways, the damage has begun to repair itself. The University has returned to business as usual, the wheels of justice continue to turn, and the facts as to what actually transpired, and when, will be hashed out in both the judical and journalistic venues.

And the fact remains, that the earlist stages of the scandal were managed and manipulated by a sensation-oriented cadre who had little knowledge of the instituion's history and character, and neither the incentive nor the decency to investigate. Until that point is addressed, and the key participants identified and similarly called to task, I will remain neither fully convinvced nor fully satisfied.

But time, as usual, favors the truth.

I still think that they should have loaded all of those trophies into a cannon, and shot them back. >;-D I think it's just a matter of time until the concussion-injury issue ends college football, and all the schools need to be planning accordingly.

I fail to see how a scandal involving the trustees and the athletic department should have any affect on the academic reputation. Back to the business of education is exactly what should be happening.
