Hey all, I'm considering a move to FL and I'm trying to find my families' ideal place. We need something decently priced (rent for typical 2 bdrm home below $800/month), safe, with great schools. We originally looked in the Jacksonville area (Julington Creek, Mandarin), but have started to look elsewhere due to job market/salary in that area.

My boyfriend is a landscaper, and apparently in the Jacksonville area, it's a hard market to break into on your own (because there's millions of companies already, and 2-3 big time ones that secure most of the projects). Working as a laborer for an established company comes with very minimal pay (like $8-$10 per hour average). Currently here in WI, he works for himself and makes $25/hr on average (for basic lawn maintenance), and more for projects (walls, ponds, patios, etc).

Is the niceville/crestview/pensacola area big on landscaping at all? Is it just the Jacksonville area with such low pay for the position, or is that all of FL? Is there any hope of living a decent lower mid class life with this occupation in FL?

Greater Ft. Walton Beach is a lot like Jacksonville but with higher housing costs and lower crime rates.

Sorry, but I don't think you'd find it better here than you would in Jax.

What are the top career fields in this area of fl? My interests lie in photography (families, children, outdoors and especially beach). My boyfriend is interested in schooling, any strong tracks to consider? What about diesel and heavy machinery mechanic?

The panhandle is largely military and tourism. Photography is a bit hard to break into unless you want to deal with wedding photography. Mechanic for land vehicles is probably the same job demand as anywhere, but if you've got experience working on military aircraft, you can probably have a job edge for some of the DoD stuff, provided you can get appropriate clearance.
