My mother divorced him when I was very young and I have no memories of him. I was able to find his address and phone number in a few seconds on the internet.

I had called him almost 10 years ago on the phone and we exchanged contact information. It was a good phone call and I figured he would call me since I initiated contact but he never did.

He is 77 and I would like to get to know him a little better and meet him for the first time in earnest before I don't have the chance again.

Obviously, I have never done this before. Any advice from folks who have?

Do I ask to meet in the first phone call? Or do I give it some time?

Since he hasn't called you once in 10 years, you need to proceed very slowly/cautiously about this. Write him a letter to let him know that you want to get to know him a little better and reassure him that you don't want anything else from him now--also mention that if he wants no further contact from you that you will abide by his wishes. Are you an adult now or a minor or teenager?

Letter verse calling...I haven't thought of doing a letter honestly but that might be a good approach. I am an adult.

Check your direct messages.
Your first call 10 years ago did not end in a "sorry wrong number" which is good.
A letter this time, might let you say things that can be more difficult on a short phone call.
The letter lets your Father open it in his privacy, read it in private and take a little time to respond.
Good luck on it.
