Ok, I went to my credit union and was able to secure a loan at 8% for 60 months which is much better than a credit card and I won't have to touch my retirement which I would have had to pay off in 36 months.

20K? have you considered traveling to Mexico to get it done? You could probably get good work done for 1/4 the price and then the ticket price a few hundred $ and have a few margaritas with teh savings...oh..considering it is dental work, maybe not a good idea to drink margaritas!

I would still shop around a few different dentists. Couldn't hurt to figure out if you are getting over charged.

I visited a dentist when I was in Quito, Ecuador and had a cleaning done for 1/3rd the price, the best part is that the dentist was much more sophisticated than dentists here..he had state of the art equipment and everything, besides being highly competant. Absolutely no reason to submit to the price gouging US health care system, I am NEVER having anything major done here in the USA again.

Apologies to the OP, didn't mean to turn your thread into a debate about health care All the best to you!

Have you considered finding a dental school near you? They often do expensive dental work at about half the cost: always a professor working with a student ( at least that is what it is here). I have a friend who had a bunch of implants done that way.

Default yes. I like the word 'clobbered' yet, 'hornswaggled' is a nice optive too.

If you put it on a credit card, if your credit history is good, you will from time to time get 0% interest balance transfer offers, you can "hot potato" the debt from one to another of these for a few years.

By all means check out what kind of personal loans you might be able to get - if you are not a credit union member this might be a good time to join.

HELOC might or might not be a good option - how much equity do you have? Although, rates are good now, you might do a complete refinance with equity taken out, assuming you have the equity to take. Depending on your current interest rate and what you can get now, this might be an OK deal.

Keep in mind that you don't have to get all of the $20K from a single source. Specifically, you could do as much as you can stand with the Flex Account (assuming you have one available) and then do one of the other options with the rest of the cost.

Good luck with this. Getting clobbered with an unexpected and large medical bill is not fun.
