No you are not. Every state different. I don't know much about Dakota, but it's like this:

If your costs do not exceed your income, you are doing fine. Now if you were in NY......whole different story.
I skimmed all 4 pages so I don't know what your current job is, but most likely that is what your parents are concerned about, your future. I assume you are going to grad school to get better oppurtunities. That's good as well and it will pay off down the road. At 30 years old, most people in the worforce still consider you a kid. It's when you reach mid 30s or early 40s you are cinsidered an adult. Well that's how it is in my industry.

well I make decent money and I work hard for it. I don't look down on those with less money, thats where I came from. Making barely $5/hr. I just try to do 3 good things everyday. From the random addict to the single mother at the market. You would be surprised at how much $200 can help a person in need! That said I have never actually gone to school for what I do (Web design/programming). Proof you don't necessarily need school to come up in this world. It is all about time, attitude, and determination. In conclusion don't feel bad about what I make. My goal is 250k, so yeah. All you can do is try to come up in the world and spread the wealth.

should i be ashamed of making only what i make? i feel that when i'm in my fourties i will want to have a better career and make more, but i am recovering from a nervous breakdown and i don't want to push myself right now.

i feel working full time and going to grad school part time and my other activities is plenty.
Don't worry about it.

I'm a grad student myself and I make do on ~$23,000 a year. Yes, I have cut my lifestyle to the bone (e.g. roommates, no car, etc.), but so what? As long as you have some social life it's perfectly fine once you get used to it. If you don't like it, remember you are going to grad school and you should be able to earn a lot more once you have the degree to show for it.

Don't worry about what others think about your income or what label they would put on you. The delta between your income and bills is what makes you feel broke or not. If you have good enough savings after bills to be able to invest and have fun, then youre doing better than a lot of people.

I think he meant in the some parts 30k is a good amount, but in the coasts and NYC, it's barely enough (minimum wage)

In North Dakota, no. Here in Boston? Absolutely. You'd need to more than double your income to live the lifestyle you live in ND here.

Is $30,000 a year poverty? Absolutely not. The federal poverty line for a single person in 2014 is $11,670, or 972.50 per month.

The formula for coming up with this amount was created in 1965 and has had a few tweaks but it is primarily based on 3 times the cost of food. So 1/3 of 972.50 would be 324.16 per month for food and 648.33 for everything else.

My yearly living expenses are $10-12k and that's with some luxuries. I'd say $30k is plenty where you're at.

Default Not enough

Consider today's standards and 30k isn't enough for a 16 year old! If you really think about it an American should have a new car house boat and motorcycle just to have what a lot of people consider "standard" well if you add that up alone
Car 1k a month
House 1k a month
Auto insurance 300
Motorcycle 300
Boat 300
That alone is 2900 bring home what about food, gas, schooling, bills etc.
60k should be minimum wage since you really cant even do much with 60k a year hell I spent 30k in two weeks vacationing to Ireland and in my opinion ever single American should be able to travel every year. And on top of that look at the prices of things Work 40 hrs and afford 1 pair of Bluetooth headphones smh what a joke So no 30k Is not enough
