Thought this might make an interesting thread... what's your most recent financial hiccup or something that had you dip into your emergency fund?

For me, I just found out 1 of my certifications just expired and I can no longer work at my part time gig this end of the month. I just lost 3 days worth of pay. Frustrated me so much.

What's yours?

Doing some extra work on our home's exterior renovation.

It added an extra 20% to the final bill... 20% that we had not saved for. But we are thrilled with the results, and paid in full with cash as a CD came out the same time the bill did.

galaxy...apparently it downloaded music onto googleplay rather than the phone itself so it was charging me extra "data" usage to play the music. i transferred everything to an old ipod as soon as i figured out what was going on, but the extra data ended up costing me around $100

I made a "kid" mistake...have since learned. A couple of years ago I was driving my car hard, missed the 3-4 shift and instead went 3-2 at a reasonably high speed. Blew 3 valves on my engine, and a 2 month, $7,000 repair later, I was back on my feet.

I've been with Progressive for our car insurance for years and in July it came up to renew. For some reason it was $200 more than usual so I called about it. They said it was because they had pulled a random drivers license record check and my husband (a listed driver on my policy) got a ticket for improprer lane change. He swore up and down it wasn't true.

He decided to get a quote for my car with the guy who handles all the insurance policies for his business, and his quote was HALF of what Progressive's was, for a million dollars coverage (compared to the basic $25k), also his drivers record was clean, so Progressive was lying about the additional charge.

This opened my eyes a lot to how these Geicos and other companies can afford such ads. It's highway robbery. And that basic coverage, when you think about it, if you do get in an accident where there is personal injury it will cost you way more than $25k, and they can sue you for the rest, including putting a lien against your home. I'll never make that mistake again.

I work out of the house. I only eat what I kill, so to speak. My wife is the VP of Finance for a large company in town. In the purchasing of our house in 2006, we decided to only base our budget on what she makes, not what we both make.

Best decision we ever made. In 2008-2009, my revenue was roughly 30% what it had been in 2007. Things were really tight, but it didn't kill us.
