Divorce is biggest financial disaster I see among those that were on track... absolutely devastating for some.
So living on the government dole is "off the grid"

That's a new one.

All residents of Alaska receive a government check once per year. It's called the Alaska Permanent Fund and comes mostly from state oil revenues. In 2013, each person in the state received $900 - not quite the same as living on the government dole.

I assumed "nice check" meant something different

Each resident of Alaska receives a yearly dividend form the States oil and gas leases...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Permanent_Fund

It has ranged anywhere from a few hundred to over $2,000 plus there was a one time $1200 bonus.

Never thought of it as being on the dole anymore than a shareholder in a corp receives a dividend.

GAH! Sorry, I know that's interest. How did I type it that way? Total brainfreeze, and didn't even notice it after posting.

Thanks for the catch! I still can't believe I typed that.
