We all know these people. You come home Friday evening from a long, hard work week. You stop by your local deli or store to pick up some milk or other items. You wait in line, reflecting on the day's events and trials that have unfolded. Maybe lookng forward to the weekend and seeing family and friends. Suddenly, it hits you, "why isnt this line moving?"

You look up and see one of these obnoxious lottery heads, with their fresh paycheck cash, ordering like 10 long-winded lottery tickets. Foreign terms like "box 24" and "daily straight midday" are thrown about. meanwhile, all you want to do is go the Moderator cut: h*ck home. It makes many of us wonder, why do these people Moderator cut: throw away their money like that? Is it an addiction? Do they realize that statistically they have a horrendous chance at winning anything?

I don't personally know anyone like that, so can someone shed some light on these people's rationale?

Thanks

Mostly addiction. Guessing many of these people tell their friends/family how much they 'win', while conveniently leaving out how much money they spent on the tickets to get their 'winnings'.

Relax -- the lottery system is the only true "tax on stupidity".

I don't think I quite fit into your category of a "lottery head" but I do on average spend about $10 a week on scratch offs and power ball tickets. Not that I have to justify how I spend MY money but I buy them because it's fun and it gives me a little bit of hope. I don't mind spending a few dollars on a dream. Obviously the chances of winning big are dismal but people do win so why not me? So what if I throw away $40 a month, people waste money on all kinds of unnecessary stuff (designer clothing, video games, expensive restaurants, manicures, alcohol.)

As for holding up the line, I seldom get behind someone buying tons of tickets so maybe you're just unlucky. Maybe it's a good thing that you don't play the lottery.

Yup, they finally "win" a few thousand or more after they spent twice as much as that to get there. Had they only taken that money each week and put it into an index fund.

I don't want to say it, but those people will never be rich because they don't know how to make money work for them.

In Illinois lottery players are even bigger suckers, since the lottery agency has announced payouts over $600 will be delayed until the State has a budget. With the Statehouse and Governor conspiring to do nothing, that could be years.

Why not save $50 per month in a mutual fund instead? Your chances of having significant money are much, much better.

The Amana Funds allow you to open a retirement account with as little as $100 and each subsequent investment can be as low as $25.

Amana Mutual Funds Trust | Saturna Capital

$50 per month in Amana Growth (AMAGX) over the last 20 years would now be worth $34,579.04

$50 per month in Amana Income (AMANX) over the last 20 years would now be worth $30,226.93

"Lottery Heads" -- I thought it meant the heads (chiefs or top state officials of lottery programs) -- as in the head of the state lottery program....but the title means lottery 'junkies"...people who play to the point of you wondering whether they're addicted or not.

I had a co worker who played to the tune of 50.00 a week....yet he was always greedy for overtime.

I think a lot of lottery players feel their only chance to accumulate a large amount of money is to win the lottery. I have a friend that plays. He probably makes around 55K annually, is 56, and doesn't have more than probably 50K saved for retirement. Even though I've told him the odds are effectively zero that he would win a large amount, he sticks to the mantra, "... you have to play to win."

If I were in his situation, I would probably also be playing the lottery, so I can't condemn his decision.

You could choose to go to a regular grocery store where they don't sell tickets at the register, and avoid all this.

It's what I do, because it makes me crazy to watch people who have no money to waste throw it away on worthless paper, and I have no right to tell strangers how to live.
