Ok was speaking with a friend who has a friend who filed taxes with H&R block, her and her boyfriend are getting $10,000 back each. they live together not married have one child together and she has a child from previous guy. she is on unemployment she claims one kid age 16 her boyfriend claims the other,2 years old. he makes about 53,000 working for township, they dont own a home they rent, they file seperatly. they are each getting back $10,000 they said H&R used alot of deductions i dont see what they could have deducted. My husband and i make together $55,000 and we own and deduct taxes and interest,we have 1 child age 13 and we get hardly anything back. how is it possible they could get that much back? Im sure sooner or later they will get audited.

are you complaining that you are not getting as much as your friend's friend? Withouth knowing all the details we can only assume what is going on. In any case 53k and 10k back is almost 20% seems shaddy. Maybe you should take a trip to H&R block and ask for the special treatment.

While $10,000 seems pretty high, if they are both filing as head of household, etc. there are some pretty substantial credits available. Also, what are they having withheld each year? If they are claiming zero exemptions and having a lot withheld, that could be part of it as well.

no im not complaining at all, im just so like in shock how this happens to someone not working on unemployment and getting all kinds of tax credits, she worked at a subshop prior to going on unemployment making subs so i know she wasn't makes alot of money. they are filing seperatly.
I just feel like she is getting money from the government for nothing, and i work my ass off for it, it seems. i dont know i guess im just a little frustrated as to our tax system.

Check your withholdings, they may need to be adjusted to get more money back. I work part-time for H&R Block during tax season, and see all kinds of different amounts for different people. They have a different scenario than you do. If you have children and aren't working, there are many programs that will help a person, and that may be why she's getting more money back than you are.

Well, again, not knowing the exact situation, you can't know for sure. But, I would say that for her, the EITC could provide a couple of thousand, the child tax credit is good for a thousand, making work pay, $400, and so on. And, if your friend claimed no exemptions on her W-4, she would have had a lot of money withheld when she was working, and probably is getting all of that back.

Again, unless you *see* both of their returns and see what credits were claimed and the exact amount of the refund, you have nothing to base a complaint upon.

She could still have tax money withheld from unemployment checks.

First : The H & R Block company will LEGALLY get you back as much as they can. I seriously doubt the Block is going to lie to get her and him huge refunds .

The next factor : Could they be lying ? Not much to lie about . She is on unemployment. She has no income other than that. He makes $ 53,000.

Deductions : I do my own taxes but I can tell you I know someone who has 3 children, very low unemployment ( less than $ 200 a week ) and she is getting back $ 8,000.

You have to understand the standard deduction this year is $ 9,250 ( close ) x ( times ) that by herself and her 3 kids , that's $37,000 in standard deductions.
Then there is a tax care credit per child, ( all kinds of deductions ) I could go on and on. I think she also gets the EIC ( earned income credit because her income is so low )

Why should she not get the $ 10,000 ? When you have children the gov'ment gives you back something at the end of the year for all you spent on your child, including credits for daycare . ( I don't have little ones so I am not current on all the deductions you could receive for having children ).
