No, you take care of your own child financially and do not allow anyone else to give you money for their care. You also adjust your taxes so you have a very small return or owe a small amount.

The child tax credit, not just income tax withheld, was enacted to help low income families support the child. What is the Child Tax Credit? Do I Qualify for the Credit?
I know you said he has helped you with expenses but he is doing that to make your child's life better. I would keep any money you receive to do that.
