But my accountant has saved me money in the past based on rules that you wouldn't know existed unless told or happened to stumble upon them.

Plus he gives me a pretty sweet binder with everything in order and together to a level of detail I know I would never do.
I think $158 at CPA is a great price. TurboTax charges $59.99 for 1040 return, I think. Plus I hope your state return was included in $158. I never do my state return in TurboTax, as once federal is done, our state is a piece of cake, I do it right on the state's website. However, if someone would offer me to do both under $160, I would do it in a snap!

I'm actually quite shocked that you paid so much - I always thought you the most frugal person outside of Frugal Living forum

You're not. We paid more than double what you paid for our taxes.

I am thinking I should do it myself next year. Past years I had complex tax prep. How much did you pay?
$0. Used Taxact through IRS web site, and it also handled my state return!

Last year: $328. I was shocked. It didn't used to be so expensive. You can probably guess why I decided to do it myself this year.

$49.99 - TurboTax. Unless you are self employed/small business owner or have some type of complex investment vehicles, ie. trusts, foreign accounts, etc., going to a tax preparer is a waste of money.

State is included!

He doesn't even take on anymore clients anymore because he is so busy. He's charged a fair rate ever since I've used him.

$1,300 for my corporate taxes which had to be filed by March 15 I believe it is and now I have to pay for my personal taxes. With a 72,000 page tax code, my taxes are much more complicated.
