the general rule is if the company has a desk at the office for you than the deductions are iffy . but you can mess yourself up if you start playing around renting yourself a room as the exclusion if you sell gets prorated .

Thanks,
I work for a company just at home. I believe i don't have enough itemized to qualify anyway. Only standarad deductions
If you have $1 of expenses you get to deduct that on schedule C. This has no relationship to your itemized deductions.
Look up the IRS guide on office at home. In the last couple of years they have made a small (think up to 1,500) easier.
If you start depreciating a room in your home be sure you understand how that will effect you if you sell the home. If you are renting then an office at home deduction might work for you.
Starting in tax year 2013, there is a simplified Home Office Deduction. One of the things it provides is you don't depreciate the office space so you don't have to recapture it when you sell the house. See here for more info https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small...fice-deduction

I guess I should have been doing this the last few years as my wife works from home. I wonder if there is much risk in red flagging things is I amend the last couple of years worth of returns or if it's even worth it using the simple method
needs to be above 2% of AGI to be deductible on Schedule A so not worth it for most...
