He'd also get the benefit of standard 9-5, amazing health benefits, a pension, tons of vacation time. He could... probably should... He was once approached by the Gov (DoD), but he wasn't a citizen and that brought a full stop to the process.

He could do it now though. He would love to move into research and the sciences.

My experience with state jobs in IT (state universities, to be clear) was that they were almost as stressful as private sector jobs. They also paid on par with private sector. And yeah, you get ton of vacation on paper, but good luck being able to take it. Long running projects usually keep you from doing so. It's a myth that state jobs require less commitment than private sector ones. At least in my field, I don't see a big difference.

You can, of course, try to take a more laid back approach, do 9 - 5, take all your vacation etc. State jobs usually have the same at will employment as private sector ones. One of the jobs I had was on annual contract. I've seen people being "non-renewed" all the time. Oftentimes they were the "laid back" ones.

YMMV.

My husband also went into gov work for a while. Would not recommend. He felt he lost a lot of skills and earning potential through his 8 years there. When he decided to look for a job in the private sector again, all the recruiters told him he was waaaay underpaid.
