We pay $3,200 cash on around $12,000 cash income each month. That's 26%.

About 10 years ago before I got married and was making only $60,000 a year I was paying $800 on around $3,000 of income each month, which is actually 26% as well.

26% is 26%, but at least for our lifestyles we don't spurge on a ton of stuff, we have a very economical sedan that's $400 a month all-in and don't go crazy with clothes or high end things or a boat or anything crazy.

That's a huge difference being left with $2,200 in cash each month after housing expenses or $8,800. I think your relative income levels mean a LOT when looking at that 25% or 35% of your income you spend on housing each month.

Am I misunderstanding something? Isn't that a take home of $144k? It's a good income, but doesn't seem like something insane for a dual income professional couple.

It's not the same as a half a million dollars in net household income BUT it's still a GREAT household income hence the curiosity about what the couple does.

I'm retired and no mortgage. Property taxes and insurance run about 4% of after-tax income. OTOH, I'm spending about $150k this year on maintenance and home improvements that include two new bathrooms, a house addition, new roof, paint job and shop building. Property taxes and insurance will probably go up to 6% of net when I'm done.
