I found a wallet in the trash at a public rest room. It had a $3600 check in it, all the credit cards and cash stolen. I called the owner of the wallet and they had already stopped payment on the check but were glad to get their wallet, photos, and id back.
Actual cash, as far as I can remember, is limited to coins.
I did find a nice leather brief case on the side of he road. I bet someone set it on the car roof while they opened the door and then drove off with it on the car. There was no id for the owner, but a few papers with phone numbers that I called and got hold of his father who drove out to meet me and get the brief case. He tried to give me $20 as a reward. Seriously? No, just happy to get the case back to the owner. Doubly so since the papers inside looked like they might be important.
$400 - While swimming at the beach, I ran across a wad of money floating in the water. When I got out, I looked around to see who might be frantically looking for it. A couple of teenage girls fit the bill. I spoke with their parents on the beach and they said their daughter had lost her birthday money, which she shouldn't have been carrying in her swimsuit. I gave the money to them to give to her - when they felt like she had learned her lesson. She and her friend came over and thanked me later.
About $30 was the most I've ever found. I used to collect carts in the parking lot at my first job and I would find loose cash fairly often in the parking lot. On two occasions I found a purse/wallet. One had a few bucks the other had $400 ish. I turned both of these in and the owners came back to the store a few hours later both times.
400 bucks . blowing around in a strip mall parking lot . i thought i was on candid camera or something .
