Old lady has 2 adult daughters. Old lady has 300,000 at death.

One daughter has 4 kids. One daughter has 1 kid.

Old lady leaves $43,000 to each grand kid and 43,000 to each daughter.

43,000 x 7= $301,000

Only thing is one daughter and her family got $215,000 essentially and one daughter and her family got only $86,000.

My personal opinion is that this is unfair. Both daughters have good relationships with their mom and both daughters are solid middle class with household income a little more than $100,00 p/y.( not like the daughter with 1 kid is a millionaire and doesnt need the money.)

Thoughts?

You are not going to like my answer and this question comes up time from time.

So my late husband and I did not believe in inheritances just for the reason you stated. The implied "fairness". Now what is going to happen is that instead of being grateful with whatever gift they receive greedy kids are going to harbor disillusions about "love" and "fairness.

My thoughts,
I would gift the grandchildren to ensure college tuition and the trust would say that, the rest would go to whatever charity I supported. I would inform the daughters BEFORE I died that this is what would be happening and then get an outside attorney to be executor.

I have sons, currently I don't have any grandkids so this will change. We believed in helping people while we are alive and while they need it.
For example, my sons all graduated from college with no debt. I much prefer that, then leaving them wads of cash when they are in their 50's (God willing I live until I'm old and grey.... wait that's happening now. lol) My youngest is getting reading to go to law school, he'll probably come out of that with little debt.

Bottom line "fairness" has nothing to do with it. one sibling has more kids, simple math.

I hate inheritances with a passion . Both girls are doing well so Mama DID her job, she raised 2 functioning, able to contribute to society adults. THAT'S all that is required.

I beg to differ. But you are entitled to your opinion.

The more fair option is $150,000 to each daughter which generally could be used to help all kids with whatever

Even 10,000 to each of the 5 grands. And$ 125,000 to each daughter. At least in that scenario it’s not so significantly lopsided

My grandparents were quite well off and when they died around 1960 or so they left each grandchild $A5,000 in trust. Enough to be of help to us later. The business and other assets were left to their three children.

Why thank you, I'm glad I'm entitled to my opinion. lol. at the bottom of your original post you said "thoughts".

another "fair" way is to not give anyone ANYTHING. that's also "FAIR".

lol I love how people tell others how to be "fair" with money they have not earned or contributed to.

Yes you are entitled to your opinion.

It’s not equal in my eyes. Maybe “unfair” is the wrong word

Actually it kind of is equal. Everyone is getting the same amount.

Morally it is important to stay true to the deceased desires.
If they had asked to include the distribution down to the grandchildren, then that's what should be done. No questions or second guessing involved.

It is not a matter of what WE think is fair or not fair. It's a matter of the deceased wishes being fulfilled exactly as they specified.

What’s fair is a person should be able to reasonably do whatever they want with their money

One family is getting $130,000 more than the other family.

Not equal
