Indeed, especially when a culture enables them.

Evolution only cares about base level survival. But most humans want more than that. Yet they don't want to put a lid on their base level instincts to do better than just surviving.

IMO I think people not willing to sacrifice today for a better tomorrow is one of the biggest reasons people and/or families remain poor or restrict some from not getting ahead. Many immigrants made this sacrifice 50 to 100 years ago, but many do not want to make those sacrifices.

The world has become much more materialistic. Most needs a new phone, a flat screen TV, a new or newish car instead of paying off your mortgage, saving for the kids college tuition or putting a small amount of money away each month for retirement.

Live for today, relax and take it easy, and we'll deal with it later seems like the new motto in the U.S. and other places for many these days. Social media doesn't help the situation either.

I would say it is THE biggest reason.

Poverty and instant gratification go hand in hand.

When was the last time you saw anything but a flat screen in a store?

It is not a US phenomena. https://www.creditreform.de/aktuelle...bd0e12a8c5fdd4
