Hey all, so just a question on this serious matter. My dad was renewing his passport and not realizing it is not legit state department website.

They asked him for his social security number as well on the website. After he hit submit, his credit card blocked the transaction. There was no automated email from the fake passport company. He asked me and I said this has to be fraud, so now his credit card will issue be replaced.

My question is more on his SS#. If the transaction is declined, is the info that gets sent also declined?

There would be no reason to believe his information isn’t compromised including the CC info. He entered the info, hit submit and the CC company declined the transaction. My guess is the other party has everything

Thank you. Yes, he managed to place alerts on all his credit card and bank accounts. We are also talking with friends to weigh options in retaliating against the website.

From the social security website

If you know your Social Security information has been compromised, you can request to Block Electronic Access. This is done by calling our National 800 number (Toll Free 1-800-772-1213 or at our TTY number at 1-800-325-0778). Once requested, any automated telephone and electronic access to your Social Security record is blocked.

Don't of course trust me on the phone number, do a reverse search.

Also, what was the website. Post it, it may not be fake if it has .gov in the address

How can you retaliate? IF you can even figure out the actual company, they are 99.9% likely to be in some other country.

I know people. The response will be proportionate. People messing with my family or livelihood is a dangerous red line to cross.

It doesn't have a .gov domain.

Dang. Hoping that it did and the credit card company just blocked it in error.
