I've had two dogs and four cats over the years who have passed away, and they all made it to about the age of 15. That is a good age for a big dog (one was a Lab mix, the other was a pit bull), but I often hear of cats who live quite a bit longer. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

It could be the nutrition difference. Try to feed them with a more expensive brand like Blue Buffalo, Science Diet, or Innova (not the ones they sell in a grocery stores). The ingredient list on a cheap food and more expensive ones are very different.
I just lost a cat this year. I rescued him when he was fully grown so he was at least a year old. He made it to 19 with me. He was at least 20 but probably older than that.
My sister had a 25 pound black beagle mix that lived with her for a little over 17 years. He came full size from the pound, so no telling how old he was. He ate whatever generic kibble the grocery had and got the basic vet care. Other than being cantankerous he really had no signs that he was old. One day he just never never woke up.
My pit mix is now 15, I hope he sticks around for a lot longer.

I have my cat and its almost 5 years old now. she gave me around 20 kittens as well which I gifted to my friends and colleagues and these days I only own one with her 4 babies
