My husband is being transfered from Phoenix AZ to Whitehouse Station NJ. Some of his new co-workers suggested that we move to a city in PA because they said that we will be taxed less than NJ. Is that true and what cities do you recommend for a small family of 4 on the border?

Whitehouse station is mostly a tough commute from Philly/Area. You may be better up in the Allentown/Bethlehem area or also try posting on the NJ (not NJ Subburbs of Philly) as there me better info on N Jersey commutes, even from PA from those posters

NJ & PA have reciprocity so you'll pay a flat PA state income tax if you live in the state (I believe it is 3.07%) and any township tax (1% in most cases). NJ taxes are higher, especially property taxes. The tradeoff for a nicer home and less taxes is a longer commute.

Whitehouse Station is off of US Route 22 and if you want to live in PA you probably be better off living between in the Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton area via I-78 or possibly down in the New Hope area, which would be commute taking US Rte 202. Either way you are probably looking at 45-60 minutes of a commute.

I'd consider the New Hope area strictly based on the fact that you have children and are likely to be weighing quality of schools into the equation.

Best of luck!

You might want to ask on the Lehigh Valley board rather than Philadelphia. Those people will know that area better. The northwest part of N.J. is pretty nice and so is the Lehigh Valley area which sits west of Whitehouse Station in PA. Property taxes in N.J. are known to be pretty high and the Lehigh Valley area is pretty low compared to what we see in the Phila. area.
