My fiancee and I have found a house that we absolutely love in East Falls. Problem is, after driving through the surrounding streets yesterday there appears to be a neighborhood of government housings with in walking distance. Can anyone confirm? I want to say it was on Merrick Rd / Creswell St.

There used to be a hi-rise housing project in East Falls that was imploded in the 90's.
Some low-rise low income housing went in to partially replace it.
The neighborhood definitely has improved a lot since that tower went down.

Yes, there's a public housing development called Falls Ridge, but it's a mixed income community with public housing and owner-occupied homes. East Falls is nice and there are a lot of young families locating there. It's in a great location -- close to Manayunk and Center City, close to the Expressway, and fairly close to the suburbs. Here are two links:

The government housing you speak of is not 'the projects', exactly, it is a mixed-income community, with market-rate housing side-by-side (and indistinguishable from) housing for those with housing vouchers. It replaces a ghastly apartment complex, 'projects' in every sense of the word, that were torn down in the early 1990s. The old community's residents were scattered across the region, so few of the tensions from the old community remain.

East Falls is one of the safest neighborhoods of the city, and the housing project you speak of is, in its current form, a benefit rather than a black eye for the community.
