How is this area in terms of crime, safety, and culture? Is it a desirable area or something of a ghetto? The med school there is interesting to me, and I'm curious about the area.

Penn is in a section of Philadelphia known as "University City," which is one of the most vibrant, safest and nicest areas of the city. Here are a couple websites to give you an idea of the feel there:

University City District: News and Press Releases (http://www.ucityphila.org/news - broken link)

Penn: Campus in the City

If you have the opportunity to go to Penn, you should DEFINITELY look into it. The Medical School is one of the most prestigious in the country, and the experience you will get there is unparalleled. Good luck!

It is a very good school. However - it does have its share of safety issues.

PennHealth (the hospital and school of Medicine) has consistently been in the top 20 for research grants, and best hospitals in the country for quite some time. check out University of Pennsylvania Health System - Philadelphia, PA for clinical programs, and some background on the health system itself.

West Philly (where Penn is located) is a bit run-down in certain areas. There are nice areas too, but it's definitely a place you want to learn to navigate. On the plus side - there is a shuttle bus network (the LUCY), a walking and a driving escort (898-WALK and 898-RIDE respective) program, run by the school, and the campus is its own police district.

Don't get me wrong - the campus is nice while ON campus, but like with many inner city campuses - there are problems that occur at the periphery on occasion. Pays to be aware.

Great area. Certainly not ghetto but it has issues with criminals creeping in from nearby west philly/sw Philly. If you are street smart and not wandering around drunk at 3 am like some Penn students you should be fine. Its actually one of the safer areas of the city.

You might also want to consider living in center city Philly. It's an easy 10 minute commute to HUP if you live on the western end of center city (Rittenhouse Square, Fitler Square, Center City West).
