I had no idea how difficult it was to find people who fix small appliances. Anything I found online (and *gasp* I even checked the actual phone book) in the way of "appliance repair" only handles large appliances.

I remember a few years ago, I used to see "vac & sew" places here and there, where they would fix vacuum cleaners and sewing machines, but the only vacuum repair places I can find now only cater to a certain brand (not Bissell).

All I need is a plug replaced on a very new vacuum cleaner. Either the plug itself or the whole power cord. I got a brand new Bissell last summer and I love it, but my brain-damaged dog just chewed off the entire plug from the end of the cord!

I don't want to throw away a $250 vacuum cleaner. I don't trust myself to follow online directions to replace a plug. Seems more like something I should pay a professional for, so as not to set my house on fire.

Does anyone know of a place that does this kind of work? I didn't think I had to be limited to a vacuum repairman; since it's just a cord & plug, I thought any appliance repairman could do it. But it seems like these don't exist anymore (I guess anything smaller than a washer or dryer is considered disposable?)

I'm in the Morrisville/Yardley area.

I even wondered if the Bucks County vo/tech school does repairs like this. Where I grew up, people would get inexpensive repairs like rewiring lamps and fixing lawn mowers done at the vocational high school, where the students would get supervised experience.

I refuse to throw away my new vacuum!

Thanks!

This kind of repair seems pretty straightforward. Maybe just ask the "large" appliance repair places and ask if they will fix your piece? Or a TV repair person if they still exist? Or maybe call a nice lighting store and ask them if they rewire old lamps or if they know anyone who does. Either that or look for local handymen and call up and ask.

An old school hardware store might also do this kind of repair.

Where is South Jersey are you? My family are all in Burlington and Camden counties.

Good idea on the hardware store--I'll check the old mom & pop store near me.

No, all the large appliance repair people I claled said they don't do jobs like this. It must be nice to have so much business, you can just turn away small jobs!

Thanks all.

I think your idea of the vo-tech is a good one. Why not call them up? http://www.bcths.com/

hmmm, I'll keep you in mind. My sister is in Marlton.

I called the mom & pop hardware store but they don't do it. Referred me to an appliance supply place, but they only do large appliances. I e-mailed the electronics technology teacher at the voc school.

I called nearby Sears Hardware, and the salesperson said they don't have repair people there (they send out small appliances to repair places), but "all the sales associates know how to replace a plug," and would do it for me if I came in and bought the plug.

Sounds too good to be true, but we'll see....
