Hi All,

I'm moving to Philly from New York in early September with my friend and my girlfriend. We're narrowing down where we want to live, and the top contender right now price-wise and convenience to Drexel is in University City. We found an apartment complex on 49th street and Locust. How safe is the area? What places should i generally avoid in the area? Any advice would be great!

I think many say anything lower 50s is ok but it seems to be extending more quickly (so you are closer to the fringe there). A lot will depend on what you are used to and others will know UCity better than I

most of Philly can really go block by block

Generally speaking, draw a line between 40th and Market and 50th and Baltimore, stay to the right of that line, and you'll be fine (note that it's not an absolute rule).

Beyond that, as kidphilly said, much of "feeling safe" will be based on your prior experiences/current expectations.

For someone like me who has had years of being around West Philly(which includes University City), 49th and Locust would not challenge my comfort zone. For someone new to Philly it might.

Have you looked slightly south of there? Along Pine Street between 49th and 47th Sts? There are apt buildings on those blocks.

Have you actually made a trip to that area to check it out? I would do that first if you can.

I'd definitely check it out first. Not a terrible place to live, crime-wise. Not the best but not bad. I'd live there.

Where are you coming from in NY? Just so we have some idea of what you're used to and what your idea of safe is.
