Is it true that the school district taxes are billed separately from the property taxes in PA? I guess my question is if there is an annual tax number listed on a realtor site, is that the property tax only? If someone could explain this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thx!

I'm pretty sure it covers everything - schools, municipal services.

Default Taxes on Websites

All taxes posted on realtor websites should be the total tax. Pennsylvania uses a millage system for calculating taxes. A mill equals 1/1000 of a $1. For every $1,000 in value you will pay $1 per mill. Each school district and municipality sets there millage based upon their budgets and assessed tax base.

The school taxes are the bulk of the tax bill. New construction is assessed higher than existing homes.

The really confusing part is that the county sets the assessed value of a home and it is not related to the sales price.

There is a sight that you can access SRA homepage
They have the municipal breakdown for each community's millage.

All the best,

Will

Default Legislative debate

It is true--your property tax and school tax are seperate and the county you live in determines how much you pay. It is based on the assessed value of your home. School taxes are going out of sight here in Berks county as well as other surrounding counties. Our legislators have been promising tax relief for years now but so far nothing has happened. I bought my house 27 years ago and paid about $900 a year total tax. Now my property tax is about $1100 and my school tax is about $2500----total $3600 a year and our school district wants to raise them again with another new budget. I just saw that one school district wants to raise their taxes by 9% this year

PA------Land of taxes

I think all states are experiencing this tax issue. Now, I don't want to start a tax war thread, but I lived in Europe, and their taxes were much much higher than anything that I've experienced in the states. But on average their schools were in better shape. Many countries the kids go to school from Sept through July and only have August off. They found that only having a month off didn't mean they had to waste 6-8 weeks the next year re-teaching what they were supposed to have learned the year before..huh.. seems to make sense. We want the best of everything and don't want to pay for it...unfortunately it costs money. And yes I know.. money is being misspent, wasted, pocketed within the system...and cities seem to be really mismanaging this part of their budget...
