Was it around 1986? The current AMC cinema there (which itself is now almost 30 years old and in miserable shape) opened that year. I guess around the same time, lots of people were trading in their 1970s AMC (no relation) Pacers for new Japanese econoboxes, or Chrysler econoboxes under Iacocca.

That looks like early 80s, before my time

But in general the mall started to go downhill about a decade ago and fell quickly.

Thanks. Actually though the photo provided is from the mid-70's when the mall was new. There also at one time was a Granite Run Mini-Mall (yes, that was its official name) that now is the Acme/DMV building. Acme was always there, but was much smaller until the late 90's when the Eckerd and one or two other businesses closed, leading to Acme expanding and giving their store a big makeover. Kind of ironically, the Acme upon grand reopening had a Starbucks, then had a big empty hole (filled with seasonal crap) over a decade once Starbucks closed, but just finally filled the hole with a cold beer section... but the new Giant in Havertown maybe seven miles north on the same road has both Starbucks AND beer in the same section, and a very popular gas station. And yes, some Acme stores have gas stations but those are rare. None are in Delco.

Starbucks is actually planned for the revamp of the mall.

Yep... I read that. Surprisingly, around 2005 when the Acme Starbucks closed, a Starbucks opened inside Granite Run itself. It lasted a really short time (closed I believe when Starbucks itself was having problems) then was an independent coffee shop that I forget the name of, that also had a short run.

On this same subject, I was very shocked and dismayed to learn back in 2010 that Dixie Square Mall south of Chicago, where "The Blues Brothers" mall chase scene was filmed, had gone out of business after barely 13 years of being open (crime ate that mall from within), and was COMPLETELY ABANDONED and DECAYED THROUGHOUT for over 30 YEARS! It finally was torn down in 2012, but the site is still a big empty ugly hole.
