The sugar tax has been around for 2 years or so. It jacked up the price of a 2 liter soda to levels that would really turn you away. I think the cost of each bottle approached $4. Are people in Philly really paying that much now and accepted it as a fact of life?

Not me I shop outside the city. I spend as little money in Philly as possible. And the sugar tax only strengthened my dedication to doing just that.

If only my willpower was better I'd never eat sugar again. Might be one of the single most destructive poisons you can put in your mouth. I wish it was flat out illegal to be honest. I bet a lot of morbidly obese kids will wish the same thing when they have their first heart attacks at age 15. Hopefully expensive soda and candy will curb some of this and save some of these terrible health problems. Wish they'd jack the tax up 200%.

I don't drink soda (just water) so it doesn't matter to me. My wife works in Collegeville and buys soda (Diet Coke) at the Wegmans in KOP or in Cherry Hill when we go grocery shopping there. It is very easy to not shop for soda in Philly since Wegmans has better selection or going to DE in general is tax-free.

It's not just soda. The few times I've cycled into Philly, I've paid twice as much for Gatorade to re-fill my bottles.

It's earned something like $100,000,000 so far. And, it is being used now for what it was intended to be used for, afaik. I will check to see if I'm correct about both.

Since you had the $100m on your finger tips, do you know by how much the sale of sugary drink went down? That was the idea in the first place, wasnt it? An honest accountant, not paid by City Hall, would first deduct the losses in sales tax. Let's see if your $100m still stands.

The goal was to improve the overall health of the city residents while promoting valuable social programs.
How would your honest accountant quantify this? This is a social/health economics issue and not your regular bean counting accountancy.
