i have a fascination with tiny homes. i have recently observed about 10 unoccupied garages in the university city area i would like to purchase and convert into tiny homes or studio / efficiency apartments. i have stockpiles of everything to make conversions. my remodeling pals tell me this is a plain dumb idea. i actually thought this would be ideal for students as i would offer them at a much cheaper price. is this a bad idea ?

If you are asking us on here, your friends are right you don't have the expertise to do it. There's literally dozens of things you need to figure out first.

Watch every episode of Zombie House Flipping before deciding to do this. You'll learn a lot about zoning, permits, plumbing*, wiring, lead paint, and a lot more.

*Do any of these garages have a toilet?

i actually have the finances to make the conversions and knowledge of zoning etc. i know poeple who have converted barns and houses into small homes. i was trying to see if this could be profitable in the city. they all have running water and installing a toilet is standard in conversions. no big deal. thankx for the replys. this helped.

As long as it's zoned for you to be able to do it, I don't see the problem.

Certain people are always crying about there being no "affordable" housing.
Why would they be against someone turning an empty garage (and possible eye-sore, blighted property) into more housing?

Your first post wasn't very informative. You sounded like a guy who owned some tools, had done some projects around the house, and had spent too much time watching Tiny House Nation.*

I think that you'll have no problem renting a converted garage as long as there's little or no landscape maintenance. Students and some seniors don't want that responsibility.

*I've watched all of them at least three times.
