We are buying a home in West Chester. Could anyone tell me if they used a lawyer at closing when they bought a house. We had heard that real estate lawyers are not as common in the transaction process in Pennsylvania than in states such as Florida or New Jersey. If you have bought a house, please let me know of the importance of a lawyer. Thanks very much for any input you may have.

You don't really need one. Your real estate agent will act on your behalf through the closing process. If this is just a normal home purchase, don't waste your money.

We've always just used realtors and have sold two and bought three houses in PA. Our realtors have been buyers agents if that makes a difference.

my boyfriend and i are going through some crap bec of his brother in law is try to sell this house because of damages and pets and we know how to take care of animals and take care of house we feel he has no right to do this to us

Not typically used in PA (unlike NJ). You'd generally only use if you were selling / buying a house without a realtor. Not that i would necessarily trust a realtor's judgement on legal issues, but the contracts are all standard form so as long as you are capable of reading and understanding them yourself, without influence from a realtor who is incented to just get the deal closed, you should be fine without a lawyer.
