Here we are in relatively late 2018, and there has never been a satisfactory answer to that 'big picture' question. The intellectually honest among us (such as myself, I would be immodest enough to say) would step forward here and say 'that's because life is meaningless'. Me personally, I think that renders life completely unsatisfactory at some basic emotional level, but given that, I will take at least some time to offer this speculation--perhaps some humans are better than others to deal with meaninglessness in the abstract; perhaps some when confronted with it say 'so what' as according to their genetic disposition and some say 'kill me'? This will likely be a major topic for psychology to consider in an increasingly secularized society and also increasingly nihilistic society (face it, the latter is inevitable too) in future decades
