Hello Everybody,
We are relocating soon from VA and not sure if we should take our furniture or buy new one in Phoenix. Shipping costs are very steep, as you might already know, our furniture is not expensive so we could certainly give it to a local thrift store in our neighborhood. However, I have read stories about Phoenix being infested by bed bugs –ASU dorms, hotels, motels. My concern is that the furniture stores, consignment stores and their storage facilities might have bed bugs as well. What are the chances of carrying these bed bugs with the newly bought furniture in our new home?
Has anyone heard of or read about furniture stores, consignment stores in Phoenix being bed bug infested? I appreciate any thoughts.
Thank you.

I'm worried that you might bring them from VA. I googled and came back with dozens of hits about bed bugs in hotels and other places in Virginia. Do you worry about that? I don't think your chances of getting bed bugs in new furniture here are any more than in VA and that would be pretty much near zero. Maybe consignment would be higher since it has been used. They might treat furniture they take in though.

Talk of bed bugs went around last summer but I have never seen them. Moved here last July and have no problems with bugs of any kind.

No bed bugs here. If you ever do get them, you can get some machine that heats the house up to 150 degrees for four hours (not that our summers don't practically do that!) and it will kill them all.

Either that, or there is a product called Cedarside which is non-toxic and supposed to work quite well. Bed bugs have developed resistance to chemicals ever since DDT was banned in the 1970s (or so says my Dr.)

Phoenix would have the least bed bugs of US cities, I have been some cities where they are completely infested with them.

A dorm in downtown Phoenix was just sprayed for bedbugs. The problem is growing in the area.

I can see dorms having bed bugs, you have students from all over the world bringing their nasties.

^^Yes it is possible, however the infestation PheenixJobless is referring to was limited to ONE room:

I did not see anything about a growing problem, but I could be looking at the wrong thing?

They said on the TV news that they treated one room and one next to it, although it did not have the bugs, out of an abundance of caution.

The fact that it was TV news should tell you something. It is not commonplace or it would not be newsworthy. I mean how many stories about scorpions do you hear? It would be a lot more likely to have a scorpion in a new couch than a bed bug. Or a rattlesnake.
