I think some of the pre-emergents like what the city uses are dyed green to show where spraying has occurred. Or maybe that's just weed killer, not sure. I think the city/county/state uses pre-emergent to keep all the public areas like the freeway embankments weed-free. I would love to figure out when/how to do it. I sometimes buy Preen pre-emergent from Costco and sprinkle it out over my rocks but it's a pain because you have to hose it in. I hear there are landscape companies that will come spray pre-emergent on your rocks twice a year for like $75 a pop but I haven't found one yet. You'd think there'd be a big demand? Chasing the weeds with Round-Up is a pain. And don't even talk to me about the people bending over and pulling all those weeds!

I think that could be a preemergent, too, I've seen ADOT using stuff in the right time of year for preeemergent, and they spray it where there aren't any weeds.

I've dug them up with a digging fork, too. A good crop of winter weeds looks like something you could make a salad with! (or cook like collard greens)

When I was younger I worked for the city parks dept maintaining parks. We sprayed something along the lines of ground clear everywhere we didn't want something to grow, along the edges of baseball fields where they came up to chain link fences etc. If it could grow or did grow weeds we sprayed it so we wouldn't have to come back for many months plus it didn't cost us a dime, the city provided all we needed.
That being said, if your doing rocks use the ground clear, I've only had to spray once a season but for my house it takes about (2) 2 gallon tanks to do it.
If you're doing grass, as I said before there's many products that are grass friendly and if dormant you can A.see the weeds as they're green B. Spray 'em with roundup as the grass is dormant C. Treat with a pre-emergent (as long as the lawn is established) if new grass you have to hand pull.

Not much rain this year, so weeds are pretty minimal. I spray with Roundup (generic from Walmart) and use a hoop-like weeder as well for some lawn rock areas.

It's the only thing I've ever found that dissolves the mineral ring in my toilet, so it doesn't surprise me it would kill weeds.
