Hi. Does anyone know what to do to get rid of nesting pigeons? Is there a company you've used that uses techniques that actually work? The home is in Central Phoenix. Thanks.

This may sound a little "whacky" but it works . . .

Drill a small hole very close to the edge of a couple of CD's and hang them with fishing line close to the nesting spots. Granted it looks kinda goofy but the spinning CD's will discourage Pigeons and Doves. It beats the heck out of the expense of an exterminator and doesn't hurt the pooping buggers either.

Good Luck

I have two pillars in the front of my house that originally attracted nesting pigeons. I had BugBusters or a similar company come out and put these strips of tall angular spikes around the perimeter of each one.. they painted them to match the house, so unless you are looking for them you don't see them. They work great.

I got tired of them roosting on my very high two story roof (too high for me to get too) and messing all over the front of my home. I dropped a couple of them with a BB gun using my house for a backstop to make sure I didn't shoot in the air. A couple dead pigeons on the roof and the rest seemed to get the word and moved on.

Pigeon free for several months now.

Pigeons don't mourn their dead. I haven't shot one in well over a month because there are hardly any around now. They'll be back en masse next summer. I use an airsoft pistol with biodegradeable bb's.

Lol, yeah I doubt that the lack of pigeons is due to them traveling for funerals but I do think animals know when a place is more dangerous then another place and will move to a safer place (my neighbors roof).

Ugh - they are flying rats! Years ago, we purchased a two story lakefront home in Chandler. The house had been empty for most of the year prior to our purchase (death in the family situation) and had become the pigeon party house.

We tried numerous self help techniques including all of the above, but the infestation was massive.

Finally, we had to hire professionals who rigged up electric wires on the roof, connected them to a solar powered battery, which shocked the buggers everytime they tried to land. We had those pigeons circling our home like an Alfred Hitchcock movie for two weeks before they finally gave up and moved elsewhere.

It wasn't a cheap fix. The only other method that might have worked was poisoning the things, but we worried neighborhood children, dogs and cats could be accidentally poisoned if they got hold of one of the dead birds.

Austin - To our original question, if you want to hire a good professional you need to ask a few questions of them. A good wildlife control company that can work with removing your pigeon issue should be able to tell you what they are going to do and why it will make the birds move. Along with that should be a warranty, some companies won't back what they do, if that is the case don't provide your money to them, find someone else.

Try calling your county cooperative extension office, they often have wildlife extension specialists and know of good companies in the area.

I do this type of work over in NM and I see lots of "other" techniques applied every day. People will even ask me can you hang some mylar tape, or put up a plastic owl. My response is that they can try that themselves but it isn't a professional and lasting solution. The owl is a great concept, as it is a predator, but pigeons are not stupid, they realize when the owl doesn't move after awhile and in our southwest heat, they become shade for birds, literally.

I can show you a ton of inspection photos of pigeons literally building a nest on their dead relatives that died through natural causes, egg shells, dead chicks, etc...

Killing pigeons is a band aid approach and while it may be cheaper you will have a chronic problem that won't go away until you modify the "habitat" created by your home.

Ledges are great for looking at your neighbors bird feeder, central air units up on timbers on flat roofs are great for nesting under in the summer heat, all of these places can be modified, some simply, some more complicated, to result in long lasting positive results.

Also, many people first mention spike strip when solving these problems. Spikes can work and don't cause birds any harm, but they aren't a silver bullet. Under a ledge or soffit, pigeons will nest in them and throw sticks in making your problem worse.

A good company can tell you they use a variety of products, netting, spike, ledge wiring, flex or shock track (mild shock that moves the birds and is very effective as mentioned above).

Also, avoid someone who offers sticky gels as the best deterrent. In AZ/NM these gels turn to black stain on your tile roof very quickly and become ineffective after about a month of good heat at best.

If you need any more info, drop me a line, I don't know anyone over your way but am glad to help with more info.

Justin

The method I deployed to protect my pool has proved to be 100% effective, even better than I expected.

I rigged clear fishing line in a mesh 8ft over the pool and in a line 4" just above the pool fence. This is mostly invisible to the human eye, and to the birds too.

After a few days hitting the line and not understanding why they couldn't get past a certain point, they all seemed to just get the message and I never see them anymore. No more wasted time cleaning up poop from the patio!

All it cost me was some fishing wire and some posts etc.

The most I'll might see is a couple of feathers on the ground every month
