Took a little road trip today to Gilbert on the other side of town (1 hour driving, all freeway @ 75 MPH, and still in the Phoenix Metro Area...this place is too damn big!) to check out this development I've heard about over the years called Agritopia. Area used to be farm land and they built a huge master planned community with the feel of the midwest and old historic homes type feel, though everything was built within the last 10 years.

I thought it was pretty cool and very unique for the Phoenix area. The historic districts near downtown look like this, but of course the homes are 70-100 years old. They also kept a 12 acre farm in tact at the center of the community where you can rent small parcels of land to farm yourself. Good restaurant there too that's been featured on The Food Network.

Grabbed some lunch first...

Walked around the farm for a bit afterwards...people doing their gardening/farming...

Then toured some of the neighborhoods. Houses were awesome, garages in the back and you were only allowed to park on one side of the street, which I've never even seen before.

Agritopia is a neat development. Have you ever headed out to Verrado? I'm sure you have. A bit more new urbanist in nature.. at least the first phase of development. The current stuff they're building out there is just more of the same suburban stuff. Shame, really. The trees and craftsman style homes almost seem like a nice oasis in the desert.

Agritopia is better situated within the metro area, though.. close to the San Tan mall area. Verrado is still out there on its own a bit, but won't be so bad once commercial development picks back up in Goodyear.

Yep, I've been to Verrado as well and honestly I thought it felt more like a movie set than Agritopia. I thought this would feel the same but it didn't for some reason.

I like it - thanks for posting the pics HX_Guy.

I love Craftsman style homes, although I couldn't help but notice that a few of them had that particular stucco that I hate... the one that looks like it's missing patches like on the blue stucco house?? I have no idea what it's called... but I loathe it.

Do you know approx. what a house like the one in the second last picture would cost in this area?

Oh and the food looks good too - might have to take a drive out myself on the next trip down

Not sure what one like that particular one might cost but we did stop by an Open House at one of the homes (only home we even saw available for sale) and it was $365,000 for 4,500 sq ft. It was huge, one story on the main level and a huuuuge basement that was probably bigger than the main level. House had a total of 6 bedrooms!

Wow! 4,500 sq ft on one level... that is massive! Fantastic price for that much square footage in a very attractive, new area, but definitely not for us we're a 3 bedroom type of family. LOL

The 4,500 was on both levels I think, with one level being a basement.

Default Awesome

Both the food and the homes were great. I would not want to live on the side with no parking, wonder what the reason was for not making the streets just a bit wider? I would like to visit if not live there!

That community must suck up a LOT of water in the warmer months.

Doesn't belong in the desert.
