Lately I've noticed these insects all over that look like huge mosquitoes. Apparently, they're called crane flies and are normal this time of year. Best of all, they don't bite and are harmless. I thought I'd share this in case any other desert newbies were worried that they brought their mosquitoes to AZ with them!

That looks like a crane fly. Their larvae will destroy patches of lawn.

Interesting. I guess they're not harmless. My grass looks pretty good. I wonder where they're coming from. Maybe a neighbor's yard.

I saw these all over my pool and definitely thought mosquitoes! Glad to know that they aren't.

We have these in abundance in Texas but I don't mind them...the mosquitoes here are absolutely terrible and they eat me alive. I would take these over mosquitoes any day. Hoping the mosquito and flea problems in AZ are a lot less drastic than here in south Tx...

I don't know about fleas but mosquitoes seem to be a non-issue. Coming from MI where getting eaten alive was a way of life in the summertime, it's a very nice change.
