A lot of people like to visit this forum looking for fun activities so I thought I might repost an entry from my real estate blog (on another website).

Last week we decided to ride the Apache Trail, after not visiting for about 12 years. If you haven't done it in a while it is a very worthwhile experience. The ride which if you do the entire loop is a little over 80 miles will take you pretty much all day.

The starting point is at the AZ88 exit off US 60 in Apache Junction and runs for about 38 miles to the Roosevelt Dam. From there you can go north or south. We took AZ188 south along Roosevelt Lake to make the loop back to US 60 just outside Globe. Then back west through the mining towns of Miami and Superior toward Apache Junction.

Along the way you will see some beautiful scenery, learn a lot about Arizona's natural features and get a history lesson to boot. All free of charge, except for the gas (and wear and tear).

Anyway, if you want to read about our day trip complete with pictures: Check out the post at:
The Apache Trail an Arizona Treasure

Here is a view to wet your whistle:

I am an avid bass fisherman and I have fished those very waters. Apache Lake is STUNNING!
I've lived here for almost 3 years now and I've taken the Apache Trail 4 or 5 times now and it never gets old. What a wonderful day trip.
Personally, my favorite part of the trip is about 10 miles past Canyon Lake when the road is at the very top of the mountains. What fantastically desolate views from there. It makes you feel like you're going to see the bad guys riding over the ridge in black hats any minute.

Hmmm. Hadn't thought of that. I'd hate to see that overcome with a gozillion people.

A few years ago, the paper ran a story about it. I so happened to have a fishing expedition planned the next day. OMG! An endless line of cars from everywhere but Arizona was on the Trail. If they ever pave the road, it's lights out. I have not been back to Bartlett but once since they paved the road there.

I drove it in my jeep a few years ago and it was a spectacularly bumpy ride.

Moved to Phoenix from Minneapolis in 2012 and decided to check out the Apache Trail-Miami-Superior-AJ loop. Made for a long day, but the scenery was awesome. Have had other mini-adventures on the road visiting different areas, and look forward to more. Even at $3.40/gallon driving is fairly cheap entertainment.
