Hi,

I just moved from Europe to the US and need to buy a car. Since I don't have credit here (yet) I'd like to buy a cheap used car, drive it a few months and build up my credit score in the meantime.

What's the right way to do it? Can I just go to the (private) seller, buy the car and go to the MVD to apply for a registration? Do I have to find an insurance before buying the car?

What else do I have to do? I'm sure I'm missing something...

I would think the first thing you should do is get AZ drivers license. When you're there, DMV can answer any questions you have.

I agree with YSR_Racer . . .

Step 1) Driver's License.

Step 2) Speak with an Insurance Agent for some advanced information, etc.

Step 3) Locate the vehicle via Cars.com, AutoTrader.com, Craigslist.org (to name a few options) or, depending on your needs / wants, a Dealer or Independent Used Car Lot.

Step 4) Possibly the MOST IMPORTANT . . . arrange for a "trustworthy" Mechanic to inspect the vehicle PRIOR to purchase as most, if not all, Used Vehicle Sales are "As-Is".

WELCOME and Good Luck.

You need a drivers license.

You will most likely need auto insurance.

We have 50 states, each state has slightly different laws. What state do you plan to do this. Since you did not list the state you will be living in I am moving this thread. You posted in the Phoenix, Arizona area...

Do you have a European drivers license? That may help initially or temporarily.

Hey guys,

thank you for answers.
Yes, I do have a european drivers licence and I intend to go to the MVD in Scottsdale tomorrow morning. Since I live in Scottsdale, I thought Phoenix, AZ area is a good forum to post in.
