MNSvenska, funny you mention that... I have strong lead on a Forester and will be taking a test drive tomorrow Definitely my first choice if all goes well.

Mazda 3 (or speed3) or Focus ST would be my choices for good car and value for your dollar.

Well that's not even a hatchback or a wagon but instead an SUV. They are good cars but now sure needing the AWD is worth it down here for the extra cost of a Subaru?

what was the reason you went from a hatchback/wagon in the phx area, to a forester? an awd suv..

I do a lot of camping/backpacking and I intend on exploring much of the Southwest, so I decided to go with the Forester. It was always my first choice, but it was looking like it would be out of my price range, so I was going to compromise and get something that still has decent cargo space (wagon) in my price range. Hence the reason for starting this thread.

However...I was fortunate enough to find a Forester in my price range through a family friend.
Very happy with it!
