We're in town for a couple of days, at a conference at Arizona Conference Center. Looking for interesting mid-price places to eat dinner near the Center - we don't have a car here.
Don't mind the nationality, though not keen on Japanese. Might be nice to find something typical of the area...
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

You must have the name wrong, googling "Arizona Conference Center" doesn't turn up anything useful.

I would hit breakfast at Matts Big Breakfast and do a dinner at the downtown location of Los Dos Molinos

if you have a group large enough for reservations or you are not opposed to long waits pizza bianco could be a neat choice

Are you referring to the Phoenix Convention Center?

If so, that's right Downtown.

Good restaurants within walking distance:

Sens -- Asian tapas
Breadfruit -- Jamaican
Pizzeria Bianco -- legendary Phoenix pizzeria, but very long wait for a table most times
Thai Elephant -- self-explanatory
Kincaid's -- steak and seafood
Sam's Cafe -- southwestern
1130 -- steak, seafood, pasta
Los Dos Molinos (Washington St. location) -- spicy New Mexican food

Restaurants accessible via light rail:

Roosevelt / Central station

Portland's -- wine bar and modern American cuisine

McDowell / Central station

Cheuvront -- wine bar; excellent cheese selection; full dinner menu

Encanto / Central station

Durant's -- classic steakhouse
Switch -- sandwiches, salads, etc. in loungey atmopshere

Thomas / Central station

Wild Thaiger -- artsy Thai

Osborn / Central station

Alexi's Grill -- Italian, Greek, etc.
China Chili -- good Chinese (mostly Cantonese)

Indian School / Central station

Fex -- loungey place with slightly North African feel

Camelback / Central station

Maizie's -- nice neighborhood place with full bar and updated American food

The new light rail system goes right by where you will be, which opens up a lot of options that don't require a car. Here is a website that discusses restaurants along the route. I can recommend both Durant's (Encanto/Central) and Cheuvront Restaurant and Wine Bar (McDowell/Central). Both are 6-8 minutes or so from downtown by train.

Be aware that a lot of the downtown restaurants are open only for lunch. One new place that has gotten a lot of interest, and is open in the evenings, is Hanny's at 1st Street and Adams, which is a block from the conference center.

There's a great micro brewery in Tempe just past ASU. Darn, suffering from brain fart, can't remember its name!

Oh, Four Peaks. duh!

Some good suggestions already - I'd also suggest District, in the nearby Shearton, and Hanny's, a new restaurant with great pizzas downtown.
