What damage does the dust storms cause?

I usually go to the window to watch it roll through for a minute or so, then go back to whatever it was that I was doing before...

We don't go anywhere, we continue on with our lives. The dust doesn't cause any damage...the winds on the other hand blow a tree over once in awhile.

Read a book. Stare out the window. Moan at the dust you will have to brush off your car. Brush your teeth. Hope power doesn't go out. Watch a movie.

If you're driving pull over to a safe spot as far from the road as possible and wait it out. Don't leave your foot on the brake if you're near a highway as others may think that is the road seeing your tail lights and run into you.

Dust storms? We have dust storms here?

Actually one way to not deal with them where you reside is live in a place in the metro where they have very little/no impact. In our part of Goodyear, I don't think I've seen one this year/any element of one. If and when they reach us, it's usually a very light haze if that.

I do what I would have been doing anyway. They typically happen in the middle of the day and it is too hot to really do much outside to begin with. Most of them are pretty light dust where I am at in the valley so even if I was out driving or something it wouldn't really change anything. Few weeks back I filled up my gas tank in the middle of a dust storm with no problems.

What to do during dust storms?
We Arizonans do what we've always done: wait 'em out -- then get right on back to life.

The media just LOVES to make a huge deal out of a simple dust storm. They have a catchy name for them. Ha boob. How can you not like something that has "Boob" in it.
It's national news when we get a dust storm. They take aerial pictures and video that is distributed and shown nationally. They lead off with this huge scary thing that is over taking all of Arizona. Kind of like The Blob movie. Life will end as we know it. Nobody is going to survive.
The simple fact is that not much changes. People continue with their lives. Most dust storms don't stop anybody from driving. I've lived here 5 years and I've seen many dust storms but there was only one that was so bad that I got off the road. I pulled into an Olive Garden, had lunch and I was on my way. The limited visibility lasted about 15 minutes.
Don't be afraid of the dust storms. They are little more than an inconvenience and most of the time, they aren't even that. Other than my pool getting a little dusty, I rarely notice them.

What do we do when haboobs arrive? We watch it from a distance, and then as soon as the wind picks up and you can feel the grit in your eyes, you head indoors. From there you watch the dust grow thicker, the trees sway to and fro, and your pool turn into a crappy mess. About 15 minutes later you stroll outside, pick up the palm fronds, skim the pool, and look at your freakishly dirty car. Thats about it.
