I just wanted to let people know of a deal I found. Fry's currently has a promotion for its turkeys. If you buy a Private Selection spiral ham, you can get a 10-14 lbs turkey for free. I bought the ham (9.17 lbs) for $27 and found a 14.57 lbs turkey (priced at $24) for free.

You paid to much for the ham, few like ham in AZ so they end up heavily discounting hams after the holiday but at least you got a good size turkey for free..
This year all the stores are selling frozen generic turkeys at the same price 89 cents a pound which to me seems like price fixing.
By the way Butterball turkeys contain no butter, it is just a brand name.

Few like ham in AZ, where did you get that information?

That would be an interesting statistic if it is true.

To the OP, that sounds like a good deal to me. We buy a ham each year from Christmas (Honeybaked) and it costs nearly $70 for the ham alone.

I paid $0.68 a pound for a Butterball at Winco. Fry's and Safeway are charging $0.89 a pound.

Since I wasn't planning to have both ham and turkey for Thanksgiving, I actually cooked the spiral ham yesterday and it turned out wonderfully...just as good as Honeybaked (IMO). If you do get that special, make sure to remember that the cooking/glazing instructions are on the back of the label.

I remember when I could buy $100 worth of groceries at WinCo and get a free turkey.

We're having lamb and a small turkey for the lamb-haters this year. We always do lamb and ham for Easter. I like turkey leftovers (dark meat) and love the dressing outside the bird. Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, has some good things to say about the dinner preparation online. Never trust a pop-up if you don't want your bird over cooked. Dressing should be done like bread pudding outside the bird. Love that sage, sausage mushrooms and more! I can't believe all the people that don't know what to do with the giblets. My sister has always done two separate gravies in case one fails. The contessa always does two turkeys so that she has plenty of left-overs to send home with the guests.
