What is the obsession with vertical blinds in rentals in Phoenix (Glendale)? I get that apartments may have them a lot because of sliding glass doors, but I see so many rental houses with them too. On the windows...it’s overkill and they’re so unattractive.

They’re cheap and you’re a renter. Not really an obsession.

Just the sound of them makes me cringe. They're cheap though, so expect them in lower-end rental houses and apartments.

You wouldn't say that if you saw the ones I just tore out of the condo we're prepping for sale

How lower end are we talking? I pay $1560 for a 3 bedroom apt and all the windows have verticals. I get that they're cheap, but the only time I saw them in Washington (renting apartments from age 19-33), was on the sliding glass doors. The windows had mini-blinds. Also cheap but less annoying. In D/FW, they're mostly 2-inch wood blinds. Some cheap places had mini-blinds, but no verticals for the most part.

And in Phoenix is the first time I've seen them in rental houses at all.

They break so much easier. I mean, they're not as cheap as the ones I used to have in WA so maybe they don't come out as easy. I don't like them either for that reason and the fact that they're ugly. I would pass up a rental house for one that had regular blinds.

I don't know that they take less dusting, but I do know they're much easier to dust. I like them.

Vertical blinds don't have cords hanging that can entangle and asphyxiate children. They are more durable, easier to open for full light or to clean the window (versus raising a heavy horizontal), and provide better privacy and light blocking because they overlap better and don't have little holes a perp can peer through.

They're also better if you have cats who like to sit in the windows, or dogs who like to look out the window. I have yet to have any of my pets damage vertical blinds. I used to have to leave the horizontal blinds pulled up about a foot so the pets wouldn't tear them up trying to look out the window. I don't have to do that with vertical blinds. That might be part of why you see them in so many apartments now.
