We just purchased a used fish tank and are in the process of setting it up. My wife is pretty into and has it almost ready to go. We did not, however, previously consider energy costs.

Do we need to run the filter 24/7? We have 2 filters capable of each handling a 60 gallon tank. Our tank is 55 gallons.

My concern is running the filters during my 12-7pm peak energy cycle. Can I use a timer to shut them off for 7 hours on weekdays without any noticeable problems? Is the energy cost that much? Any fish or energy experts, your help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dennis

Yes, the filter needs to be on 24/7, you only really need to use one of those filters. As for how much its going to cost, i have no idea.

Good point, lights only need to be on about 12 hours a day.
