Many factors go into decision about relocation! Need advice between Charlotte, NC and Phoenix AZ. Next year will have child in high school, middle school and elementary. How are phoenix schools? What area has the best schools? A bit overwhelmed and don't know how to begin comparing the two areas...
any advice is really appreciated!

Aren't you already in Charlotte? What about Houston? You didn't like it?

Decided against Houston for professional reasons. apparently cannot change my "name" on city data account - so I guess it creates confusion. Any assistance with this information would be appreciated.

Well, I don't know anything about the schools in NC, but I will say that Arizona, unfortunately, is at the very bottom of the nation as far as public schools go. I think only Nevada may be lower than us.

After growing up in the Midwest, I can tell you that comparatively, the schools here are not great. That being said, I'm sure there are good schools here and bad schools here, like anywhere, but overall we seem to be lacking.

You can use a site like Great Schools to find the best schools in the area.

I believe that only compares schools to each other within in the same state, so a 10 here may not mean the same as a 10 somewhere else, but it WILL give you a good idea of where the best schools in the area are.

I will say that I've had a really hard time finding any sites to compare schools across state lines, so maybe someone else can chime in with some better sites, but these are a couple I've found. Don't really know much about whether I agree with how they ascertained their conclusions or not, as we just started researching schools to determine if we wanted to relocate before our son starts school.

America's Best High Schools 2009

America's Top High Schools

Best and Worst School Districts for the Buck - Forbes.com

Please, if these are crappy references for some reason, someone chime in and let me know why. The last thing I want to do is spread bad info or misinformation. I'm trying my best to figure this stuff out for our family, too!

Don't know about K-12 schools, but the university system in NC is far and above anything in AZ. The job market in Charlotte, though heavy on banking and finance - is NOT dependent on tourism and residential construction like AZ and is on a better path to recover employment wise. North Carolina is beautiful and offers both the mountains and the coast. In some ways NC is more conservative but the crime is lower. NC real estate/houses have not depreciated anywhere as bad as AZ. The government in NC is a bunch smarter than AZ too - which lacks old fashion common sense. Charlotte gets two thumbs up! Good luck!
