City council to again consider ditching 'suicide lanes' in Central Phx. | LOCAL NEWS | Arizona | azfamily.com (http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/stories/phoenix-news-060909-reverse-lanes-suicide-lanes.632e6988.html - broken link)

What is the deal with this? This article says it will take close to one million dollars to change the signs if the suicide lanes on 7th Street and 7th Avenue are eliminated. WHAT? Why would it cost nearly a million dollars to remove signs? Also, they say adding new signs will cost tens of millions! Are they out of their minds? Just take the signs down and move on - what is the BFD? If they elminated the suicide lanes, they would just become turning lanes all the time, it seems pretty cut and dry to me. If someone can justify the extremely high cost of this, I would love to hear it.

Greetings from Tucson. We got rid of suicide lanes down here a while ago. Works very well.

Saying it would cost so much is probably just a way to try and NOT have to do it.

The cost of removing them probably includes repainting the lines in the road - So they're solid, and not just dashed.

Ha, I thought we were the only ones who had suicide lanes. Makes me feel better to know we weren't the only idiots.

I saw this on the news this morning. Apparently I have never been on that part of town because I didn't even know they existed!! From what it looks like though, it sounds confusing and I don't know if I would want to drive in one..

ok, I get that but still, millions? They're crazy!

I actually don't mind the suicide lanes. I used to commute in from North Phoenix to downtown for several years and they really helped with the traffic flow. However, I rarely drove in the suicide lane because if someone had to turn left it was a real PIA having to wait. So I would just use the suicide lane for passing. I can see how it could confuse an out of town person but the signs seems pretty self explanatory to me but then again, I have lived here for 30 years so I am completely familiar with it.

I just don't like that I can't make a right turn. Well I can but I'll get honked like there's no tomorrow.

I am a long time Phoenix resident and I never cared one way or the other about them until I moved to a neighborhood adjoining 7th Ave., which becomes relatively useless at rush hour. Everything north of me that is on the west side of the street (like the nearest drug store and the nearest supermarket) become more or less inaccessible after 3.

I assume it has something to do with repainting the lines if they remove the signs - but I can't see how in the world that could cost $1 million.

And no, I don't like the lanes. It just promotes rushing past the businesses that are starting to develop along 7th Avenue, and it's actively dangerous and confusing.
