This is where hdr fusion or flash are helpful.... you can try to use fill flash to bring the birds up brighter to match the sky and water.....
if i cant do either of the above ill spot meter on my subject , get a great bird exposure then ill just alter the background to something other then blown out sky or water. maybe ill change the background to all black, or maybe ill blur all around but on those scenes that exceed the cameras dynamic range ill just go for the subject and worry about the blowouts later on in post processing.
The sky in this one was soooooo blown out in order to get the flower bright enough so i spot metered the flower and using my newly aquired but still crude photoshop elements ability i extracted the flower into a new background...
That's beautiful! But I call that more "art" than photography. I'd love to see the original shot to compare. It's amazing what one can do to their photos with the right equipment and knowhow. Very creative, indeed.
Some people just have no couth. You are lucky you didn't get hit in the face with the bird's wing. Still, that's a fine mess of birds you shot chowing down, and a good example of what happens when they panic. I have been knocked off my feet by Canada geese that panicked into flight when a thoughtless person let his husky loose off it's leash and it immediately charged at them while they were grazing. I'm glad you and your camera weren't damaged. Great photos.

I did get hit ?? by a wing..?? it knock the camera out of my hands... thank goodness for camera straps.. the rush..
I guess the other photographers equipment came out OK.. not sure... to much confusing of people leaving and chasing after the ..##@##%$%&&e

The first picture is a "snakebird" aka Anhinga. I followed him along the rocks at the jetty and I was just amazed at how long he could stay under water. He was obviously unafraid of people.
For both pictures I used my one and only DSLR, Sony a200 with my 4.5-5.6/75-300 kit lens. I didn't have any filter on the moorhen picture, because I didn't own any until Valentine's Day . I used the circular PL and UV protector for the Anhinga picture. It came out a little too yellowish for me, but now I'm starting to get really picky, lol.
