For the sake of discussion:

You have a DSLR and as time goes and as things do, they advance. A model or two or three later, you upgrade and get the newest model. What do you do with the old one?

Keep it to use as a "backup" in case the newer one might break down?

Sell it on Ebay or another similar source and get as much as you can out of it?

Take it to a store like B&H or KEH and sell it to their used department for whatever you can get, and recycle the money into more photo equipment (or save it)?

I've found a surprising number of people I know at least, actually do hold on to the older stuff. The most common reason given is that DSLRs devalue so quickly it's just too hard a pill to swallow for many of them to sell the things for a fraction of what they paid for them only a couple of years earlier, especially if the camera is still in good working order. I probably fall into that camp. Others are more practical and have the "If I haven't used it in X-months, it goes for sell no matter what", idea - probably better. Not to draw the line based on sex, but the women I've known do tend to fall more into this practical group than the men, who tend to hold on.

So, discuss. Which are you? Do you try to keep it down to one camera bag, or do you have that secret shelf somewhere that has cameras on it that date back to when they stored pics on floppy disks?

I have a shelf that has cameras on it that date back to when they stored pics on film .

I usually keep the "newest" old body for a back-up and get rid of the older ones I have no particular fondness for. I do keep several old film bodies around to teach my kids and my Cub Scouts to slow down a bit and think about what they want to shoot instead of just ripping off hundreds of digital images and picking the couple favorites. I pick up older film bodies throughout the year that make good starter cameras, then usually just let the Scouts keep them when the year is over.

DSLR's though are a different ballgame for me. New body, "newest" old body, sell or give away any other. No need to keep a DSLR that is 3 or 4 purchases behind the newest one you have in my opinion.

I had to have the latest and greatest back in film camera days. I bought multiple bodies, spent thousands of dollars on a selection of lenses, and then watched them all become obsolete. Since then I have realized the best camera is the one you have with you. Right now that's a Canon Elph. I do like doing macro photography, so I have a DSLR with a macro lens and ring flash. It's also nice if I want to fiddle with filters.

Yeah, I still have my old film gear, including an old Yashicamat.

I have a Nikon D7100. There is a good chance despite any advancements that as long as this works, I'll never buy another. I did have a D5100 and I did sell it when I got the D7100.

I used my OM-10 for 20 years.

I have tended to hoard for years and then donate it to worthy causes...

I usually sell to help pay for the new stuff. I sold my D7000 and all Nikon stuff to get into a Sony A7 system

I've sold off all my "old" DSLR equipment, including the 2.8 zoom lenses. But I've kept the best of my film cameras, an F100, F3 and FM2 along with my prime lenses. I still like to shoot film occasionally so they are still used.

More than half of my lenses are from the old world. Some of the oldest that I use regularly:
Canon 50mm f/1.4 LTM II (1959)
Zeiss 50mm f/1.7 Planar (1984)
Minolta 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 (1985-87)
Minolta 70-210mm f/4 (1985-87)
Minolta 50mm f/1.4 (early-mid 90s)

I do still have and use my first digital camera, 11 year old Sony F828, but now primarily for Infra-red (and silent shutter) shooting. One of my camera bodies can be considered fairly old (Sony Alpha 55, 2010) and the other relatively new (Sony Alpha NEX-6, 2012).

Heh, I kept my Olympus E510 for something like 6 or 7 years. I bought a D5200 to replace it, kept it for a year or so, replaced it with a D7100, kept that one for less than a year and upgraded to the D750. That said, when I bought my 750, I traded in all my DX lenses and both the 5200 and 7100 bodies.

Understandable as for most of us a D750 isn't pocket change.
